Is there an age limit for getting dental implants?

There is no upper age limit for dental implants in Barrie. All that matters is that you are in good general health and have enough bone to support an implant. Age alone does not disqualify you, and many older adults are excellent candidates.

There is, however, a lower age limit. We cannot place implants when the jawbone is still developing. The age range varies, but is typically in the late teens; around 17 to 18 for females and 18 to 21 for males. Your dentist at Park Place Dental uses imaging to evaluate jaw development before recommending implants.

What Makes a Good Dental Implant Candidate?

Beyond age, there are several factors that our dentists consider:

  • Sufficient bone volume: The jawbone must be dense enough to anchor the implant post securely. Bone grafting may be an option if you have experienced some bone loss.
  • Healthy gums: We would need to treat active gum disease before placing a dental implant.
  • Good general health: Certain medical conditions and medications can affect healing and implant success rates
  • Non-smoker or willing to quit: Smoking slows healing and can significantly reduce implant success rates.
  • Commitment to oral hygiene: Due to the importance of healthy gums, committing to excellent oral hygiene practices for the long-term is crucial for implant success.
