Do I need approval before getting major dental work done under the CDCP?

According to the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), you need preauthorization for complex or specific/specialized dental treatments, including major dental work.

Examples of preauthorization treatments include, but are not limited to:

  • Crowns and other advanced restorations
  • Complex extractions and certain oral surgeries
  • Complex root canal therapy
  • Advanced gum disease treatments and surgeries
  • Complete and partial dentures
  • Certain types of sedation and anesthesia

Our dental team can give more specific answers based on your treatment needs. We can help you navigate the language of the CDCP and the steps necessary to gain authorization (if applicable) for treatment.

You do not need preauthorization for general dentistry services, such as dental checkups, teeth cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, dental fillings, straightforward extractions, and simple root canals.

Your dentist can evaluate your situation to help determine immediate coverage or the need for preauthorization from CDCP.
