Understanding your dental benefits and knowing your out-of-pocket expenses is an important part of your care, and we're here to help!

Today, we're going to discuss all the important factors you should know about your Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) benefits if you have them. Let's get started!

The "Free vs. Covered" Reality Check

Did you know that CDCP benefits do not completely cover dental treatments for many families? The CDCP actually has coverage tiers based on your family's adjusted net income. Here's how it works:

  • Lower than $70,0000 — 100% of eligible oral health care service costs will be covered at the CDCP established fees.
  • Between $70,000 and $79,999 — 60% of eligible oral health care service costs will be covered at the CDCP established fees.
  • Between $80,000 and $89,999 — 40% of eligible oral health care service costs will be covered at the CDCP established fees.

It is critical to note that the CDCP-established fees covered by the federal government do not cover the full cost of treatment in a dental office. You will cover any difference or "gap" in the fees. You are also responsible for the full fee if you elect dental treatment that the CDCP does not cover.

Doing a preauthorization for recommended dental treatment before it's performed is highly recommended to ensure you have a clear picture of your out-of-pocket expenses.

Action Plan: No Surprises in 2026

If you rely on CDCP benefits, here are some simple tips to help you avoid any financial surprises in 2026.

  • Bring Your Card — Be sure to bring your CDCP membership card with your updated 2026 information so we can expedite your care.
  • Check Your Renewal — Renewals for CDCP benefits are actually due by June 1st.
  • Request a Pre-Treatment Estimate — A preauthorization helps to ensure you don't have any financial surprises along the way.

Contact your Barrie dentist at (705) 728-9922 if you have questions about your CDCP benefits.
